Steps To Take After A Fatal Pedestrian And Motorcycle Accident

When a serious crash involves both a pedestrian and a motorcyclist, the outcome can be life-changing for everyone involved. Whether you are recovering from injuries or grieving the loss of a loved one, knowing what to do next can help you navigate a very difficult time.

  1. Request The Police Report From The LAPD
The Los Angeles Police Department usually prepares a detailed report after a fatal or injury-related collision. This report may include statements, scene observations, and initial findings. You can contact the Olympic Division or the LAPD Records Section to learn how to request a copy.
  2. Gather Medical Or Coroner Documents
If someone is injured, collect records from hospitals, ambulance services, or urgent care visits. For families who have lost a loved one, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office can provide a death certificate and may be able to share a report that includes the cause and manner of death.
  3. Save Any Evidence You Can Access
Photos of the crash scene, injuries, damage to the motorcycle, or surrounding streets can be helpful. If you have names or phone numbers of witnesses, be sure to write those down and store them safely.
  4. Keep Track Of All Expenses
For injured riders, this may include medical bills, transportation costs, or time missed from work. For grieving families, this may involve funeral costs or any emergency medical care that occurred. Keeping these records organized can help you understand the financial effects of the crash.
  5. Be Careful When Speaking With Insurance Adjusters
You might be contacted by an insurance company in the days after the crash. You are not required to make statements right away or accept any offers without having time to review your options. It is okay to wait until you have more information.
  6. Speak With A Lawyer Experienced In Pedestrian And Motorcycle Crashes
A lawyer can help explain your rights and offer guidance based on the circumstances of the crash. Whether you are an injured motorcyclist or the family of a pedestrian, legal support may help you understand what steps can be considered next.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In 2022, a total of 7,522 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States. That means pedestrians made up about 18 percent of all traffic-related deaths that year. While this number is nearly the same as it was in 1975, there has been a sharp rise since 2009, when pedestrian deaths were at their lowest. Since then, the number of fatalities has gone up by 83 percent.

One major concern is the number of hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians. In 2022, 25 percent of all pedestrian deaths were caused by drivers who left the scene. This number has increased in recent years. From 2013 to 2019, hit-and-run cases made up about 20 percent of pedestrian fatalities. That number rose to 24 percent in 2020, and by 2022, it reached 25 percent.

These trends show that pedestrian safety is still a serious issue on U.S. roads, and hit-and-run crashes are becoming more common in fatal incidents.
