Steps to Take After A Fatal Pedestrian Accident

Losing a loved one in a pedestrian accident is devastating. When the crash involves multiple vehicles and results in a fatality, the aftermath can feel overwhelming. While every situation is different, the steps below may help guide you during a difficult and uncertain time.

  1. Request A Copy Of The Police Report
Law enforcement will usually prepare a report that includes key details from the scene. You can ask the responding agency, such as the LAPD, for instructions on how to obtain it.
  2. Contact The Medical Examinerโ€™s Office
The coroner or medical examiner may provide a report with information about the cause of death. This documentation may be helpful if questions arise later.
  3. Preserve Any Evidence Or Information
Save any photos, news coverage, or personal belongings related to the incident. If you have access to witness names or contact information, try to keep that organized as well.
  4. Keep Track Of Related Costs
Gather records of any funeral expenses, medical bills, or other out-of-pocket costs. Organizing this information can help you understand the financial impact.
  5. Be Cautious With Insurance Communication
Insurance companies may reach out with questions or settlement offers. Itโ€™s okay to take time before responding. You are not required to make any immediate decisions.
  6. Speak With A Pedestrian Accident Lawyer
If you have questions about your rights or the legal process, a lawyer can provide helpful information. Legal guidance may assist you in making informed choices during a very difficult period.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In the first half of 2024, crashes involving drivers led to the deaths of 3,304 pedestrians in the United States. This was a 2.6% decrease from the same time in 2023, meaning 88 fewer people were killed while walking.

However, when we look at the bigger picture, pedestrian deaths have increased over time. Compared to 2014, there were 1,072 more pedestrian fatalities in early 2024. This shows that, even with slight improvements, walking near traffic still carries serious risks and remains a major safety issue in the country.
