Reckless Driving Accident Statistics

Drivers who drive aggressively or carelessly put other people’s lives in danger unnecessarily endanger them. Innocent people should not suffer due to someone else’s reckless driving. Drivers who behave this way should be held accountable for the damages and injuries they cause.

Aggressive driving is a major cause of traffic accidents in the United States, contributing to road rage and many deadly highway incidents each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Aggressive driving occurs when “an individual commits a series of moving traffic violations to risk other persons or property.”

While aggressive driving is difficult to quantify, a 2009 study by the American Automobile Association found that aggressive driving was a factor in 56% of fatal crashes from 2003 to 2007. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatal Accident Reporting System, excessive speed is the most common factor.

Reckless driving is classified as a serious traffic ticket or an extreme driving crime in California. The terms reckless driving, careless driving, and incorrect driving are frequently used interchangeably. Whatever you call it, it dramatically raises the chance of major car accidents.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,623 people died in traffic accidents in California in 2016, over 1,000 higher (2,720) than in 2010. There were 1,059 deaths caused by drunk driving, while 1,056 deaths were caused by speeding.

Los Angeles County Car Accident Lawyers With a Winning Track Record

Most car accident cases use the legal theory of negligence. However, in the case of reckless driving, your California reckless driving accident attorney will work to prove that the other driver was at fault by establishing intentional conduct or “negligence per se.” Intentional conduct is voluntary, with an increased chance of the certainty of the consequences, such as driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Since negligence per se involves violating California law, and reckless driving is a vehicle code violation, another driver, passenger, or pedestrian injured might establish liability in negligence per se. Either way, having a successful claim requires the skills and experience of a dedicated California reckless driving accident lawyer.

At Arash Law, we’ve seen the consequences of car accidents first-hand and want nothing more than drivers to prevent accidents. Instead, we help those struck by reckless drivers receive compensation for their damages or the passing of their loved ones.
