Motorcycle Accident Statistics

A motorcycle rider has a 35 times higher risk of dying in an accident and 16 times higher risk of getting hurt.

Riding a motorcycle is an excellent way to enjoy the pleasant weather in Los Angeles. Because of our mild climate, riders don’t have to worry about the weather changing with the seasons. Motorcycle riding is possible all year long as there isn’t too much precipitation, such as rain, snow, or ice.

Because of this, many motorcycles are often on the road. Given Los Angeles’ notoriously congested streets, this might be a recipe for disaster. In dense traffic, motorcycle accidents are more likely to occur.

Between 2014 and 2018, there were over 200 accidents per year, with 235 accidents on average. According to these figures, 255 motorcycle accidents happen annually in Los Angeles.

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation recorded 5,014 motorcycle fatalities in 2019. Motorcycle fatalities had been declining since the early 1980s, but in 1998 they began to rise again and remained that way until 2008.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car passengers have a 16 times higher risk of injury or death in an accident than motorcycle riders (NHTSA).

Drivers who miss a motorcycle at an intersection are to blame for nearly 70% of all traffic collisions. The inability of other vehicles to see the motorcycle is a frequent cause of accidents.

A fatal motorcycle accident can be avoided, though. According to studies, wearing a helmet reduces the risk of serious head injuries. The use of motorcycle helmets could prevent 37% of fatalities.
