Bus Accident Statistics

Commercial transportation companies are subject to various FMCSA and California laws, and buses are no exception. Buses are referred to as “common carriers” because they are used to transport passengers. According to California law, common carriers are required to exercise greater caution than professional drivers.

Because bus drivers and operators frequently break the law, people who use public transportation are more likely to suffer harm or pass away.

According to the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), 232 people lost their lives in bus accidents in 2017. Compared to 2016, when 234 bus accidents resulted in fatalities, this was 1% less.

Intercity buses were to blame for 13% of all bus accidents that resulted in fatalities in the United States between 2007 and 2017. School buses made up about 40% of the total, and public transportation buses made up about 35%. In 2017, 13 intercity buses in the US were involved in fatal accidents. Since the FMCSA began keeping track, this was the fewest bus accidents ever recorded.

117 people lost their lives in school bus collisions in 2018, according to a study by the National Safety Council (NSC). In the interim, 3,939 injuries and 277 fatalities were reported in California.

According to the study, bus and truck collisions caused 277 fatalities and 3,939 injuries in California.

Most bus accidents are the result of human error. When bus drivers aren’t paying attention or don’t follow protocol, accidents can occur. Other negligence, such as failing to maintain the bus in good condition or provide bus drivers with the proper training, could result in a bus accident.

After your accident, you should speak with a bus accident attorney as soon as you can. You might be forced to accept much less compensation than you are entitled to by insurance companies and other parties working on the bus company’s behalf.

Liability in collisions involving buses is frequently harder to establish than in collisions involving regular vehicles. Many other parties, in addition to the driver, may be responsible for your damages, and multiple parties may each bear a portion of the blame.
