Head-On Accident Statistics

Head-on crashes are probably the most harmful type of car accident because both drivers get hit with more force. Unlike most accidents, the two cars are headed toward each other before they crash. Statistics show that head-on collisions only happen about 2% of the time, but they cause more than 10% of all driving deaths.

Most head-on collisions result in spinal injuries, brain injuries, catastrophic injuries, broken bones, and even paralysis. Head-on collisions are rare because most drivers and lawmakers know how dangerous they are and do everything they can to prevent them.

Long stretches of steel wire cable have been put on major highways to prevent head-on accidents at freeway speeds. The cables stop cars from going across the middle of the highway and into traffic going the other way. Even though these cable systems have helped cut down on deaths, they have also caused other problems. If you lose control of your car and hit the cables, it does a lot more damage to your car and makes you more likely to get minor or mild injuries that might not have happened if there were no cables.
