Statistics on Bus Accidents

Buses are typically a convenient way to travel when you’re on the go. Bus accidents can, however, be severe and have lasting effects.

Every year in the United States, there are approximately 60,000 bus accidents. Hundreds of people die each year, and thousands suffer injuries in most collisions, which only cause property damage. Injuries from these collisions could total 14,000, according to researchers. Even though there have been more bus accidents in the past, data indicates that fewer of them have been fatal.

While injury crashes have increased by 15% between 2000 and 2018, fatal bus crashes have decreased by 29%. Two hundred thirty fatal bus accidents occurred in 2018, compared to 323 fatal bus accidents in 2000. On the other hand, injury crashes increased from 13,000 in 2000 to 15,000 in 2018. School buses are among the vehicles on the road with the highest levels of state and federal regulation for bus safety. That might be a factor in the decrease in fatal bus accidents.

People make mistakes, which are the leading cause of bus accidents. Bus drivers who aren’t paying attention or don’t follow protocol may cause accidents. Other negligence, such as failing to maintain the bus in good condition or provide bus drivers with the proper training, could also result in a bus accident.
