Car Accident Statistics

Traffic fatalities in the United States had been declining for many years, thanks to improvements like seat belts, airbags, and stronger enforcement of drunk driving laws. However, over the past decade, that progress has slowed.

In both 2020 and 2021, the number of traffic deaths increased. In 2021 alone, 43,230 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes, including 7,388 pedestrians.

The following year, in 2022, the number of fatalities dropped slightly to 42,514. While this was a small improvement, it still marked a 10 percent increase compared to 2020. These trends show that road safety remains a serious concern, and efforts to reduce accidents are ongoing.
