Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcyclists have a distinct advantage when compared to other motorists. They get to experience the independence that comes with their chosen mode of transportation, but they are also put in harm’s way in ways that car drivers and other motorists aren’t. For example, motorcycle riders are particularly vulnerable to harm because there are no substantial protective barriers between them and the road, and other drivers may have trouble seeing or detecting them.
A review of the following statistics makes the risks that motorcyclists face and the need to protect their rights of recovery after an accident abundantly clear:
Approximately 87,000 people were injured, and 4,576 people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents in 2005.
The other driver’s failure to yield the right of way to the motorcyclist is the primary cause of motorcycle collisions.
Motorcycle riders have about twenty-six times more risk of dying in an accident than car occupants and five times higher risk of injury.
The death toll from car and light truck accidents has been dropping steadily since 1999, but the death toll from motorcycle accidents has more than doubled in the same period.
Tulare County Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle accident claims, like those involving other vehicle accidents, typically fall under the general concept of negligence. Under the doctrine of contributory negligence, a motorcyclist may be barred from receiving compensation if they are even partially responsible for an accident. If the doctrine of comparative negligence applies, then the amount of compensation due could be proportional to the degree to which each party was at fault.
