According to the California Highway Patrol, a driver was killed after a fatal high-speed hit-and-run collision early on Highway 99 in Madera on Sunday, August 14, 2022.
According to California Highway Patrol reports, witnesses saw a white Toyota C-HR SUV driving very quickly in the southbound fast lane near Avenue 16 at about 1:45 a.m. In the slow lane, a blue Chevrolet van was traveling south.
According to Sgt. Lincoln McKenna, “the Toyota drifted to the right for an unknown cause and rear-ended the Chevy van.”
According to him, the vehicle left the road after the collision, overturned, and came to rest blocking the slow lane. Without a seat belt, the driver was flung from the van.
Despite the first responders’ best efforts, the motorist was declared dead at the spot. His identity remained a secret.
By the time the CHP arrived, all of the Toyota’s occupants had fled the scene of the crash. Police are looking for the SUV driver and conducting an investigation.
FATAL HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT STATISTICS
In almost all cases, the driver who leaves the scene of a deadly collision is blamed. As soon as the guilty party is found, they will be brought to justice.
A driver who leaves the scene of an accident is to blame for one out of every five pedestrian fatalities. 60% of pedestrian fatalities are caused by the negligence and carelessness of hit-and-run drivers.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that there are about 680,000 hit-and-runs every year in the country. Hit-and-run fatalities have risen at a 7% yearly pace since 2009.
11% of all traffic accidents in 2015 were hit-and-runs. Another 1,800 people were killed and over 130,000 were injured by hit-and-run drivers in 2009. 337 individuals died in hit-and-run accidents in California last year.
Because they are inebriated, do not have valid licenses, or are afraid of the repercussions of their acts, these drivers usually abandon the scene.
