Hit-and-Run Statistics
Hit-and-run accidents are a growing problem in the United States. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, hit-and-run crashes increased 7 percent from 2009 to 2016. In 2016 alone, there were 2,049 hit-and-run fatalities. These accidents often involve pedestrians or cyclists who are particularly vulnerable to serious injury or death. In fact, 60 percent of hit-and-run fatalities are pedestrians or cyclists.
There are many reasons why hit-and-run accidents are on the rise. One reason is that more cars are on the road than ever before. With more cars comes more congestion and greater opportunities for accidents to occur.
Additionally, many drivers now have access to technology that allows them to drive more recklessly without getting caught. For example, hit-and-run drivers can use apps like Waze to map escape routes after an accident. They can also use dashboard cameras to record footage of the accident and help them avoid responsibility.
Hit-and-run accidents can have a devastating impact on the families of victims. In addition to the physical and emotional trauma of the accident itself, families often face financial strain as they deal with mounting medical bills and lost wages. Unfortunately, hit-and-run drivers often remain unidentified, making it difficult for families to get the justice they deserve.
As the number of hit-and-run accidents continues to rise, it’s important for everyone on the road to be aware of the risks. Drivers should be extra cautious, especially when driving in crowded areas or at night. And if you’re ever involved in a hit-and-run accident, get information from any witnesses and call the police immediately.
