Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

California law regards bicycles as vehicles. However, to prevent accidents, cyclists must act the same way as drivers of cars. They must ride straight and obey all traffic regulations, such as stopping at red lights.

The same guidelines that apply to other forms of transportation also apply to bicycles. They are allowed to ride on the road without bike lanes. Drivers frequently ignore bicycles that swing too close by or attempt to pass them when it would be dangerous.

The most recent statistics show California has the highest national rate of fatal bicycle accidents. Urban areas, where the two forms of transportation frequently collide, are where these accidents occur most often.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 840 cyclists died in motor vehicle accidents in 2016, making up 2% of all traffic fatalities.

Unfortunately, many motorists disregard cyclists’ rights and ride dangerously close to them. This can lead to accidents and even fatalities.
