Pedestrian Accident Statistics
As anyone who has ever driven in a city knows, pedestrians can be a major source of traffic congestion. They cross streets without looking, dart out into traffic, and generally make it difficult for drivers to navigate. Every year, thousands of people are injured or killed in pedestrian accidents.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 5900 pedestrians were killed in the United States in 2016. Pedestrian accidents are more likely to result in death than other types of accidents due to how unprotected pedestrians are compared to vehicle accidents.
Pedestrian accidents occur for many reasons, but one of the most common is distracted driving. When drivers take their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, they put pedestrians at risk. Additionally, pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur at night or in areas with poor lighting. This is because drivers have difficulty seeing pedestrians, who may be wearing dark clothing.
Drivers need to stay focused on the road and be aware of their surroundings to reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents. Always use marked crosswalks, obey traffic signals, and look both ways before crossing the street. By following these simple tips, everyone can help to reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents.

Pedestrian accidents frequently result in serious injuries and even death for those unfortunate enough to be involved. Head trauma and other debilitating injuries are common in pedestrian accidents.
Vehicles have much more weight and force than pedestrians, and in the event of a collision, the pedestrian will be severely injured, not the car. Even bicycles provide more protection to bicyclists than pedestrians because they have some protection like helmets.
The injuries sustained in pedestrian accidents can be catastrophic, and the costs of medical care and lost income can be overwhelming.
