Bicycle Crash Statistics

Riding a bicycle or an electric bike on the road, especially in crowded areas, can be risky and, in rare instances, fatal. According to the National Highway Road Safety Administration, 840 cyclists lost their lives in car accidents in 2016, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 13 traffic fatalities and 1,315 injuries have recently occurred due to bicycle accidents in Santa Clara County.

The car’s driver almost always walks away from collisions involving bicycles unharmed. Cyclists are considered “vulnerable road users” or those who are most likely to suffer harm in an accident. Cyclists in car accidents may sustain severe or fatal injuries, even when wearing helmets.

Accidents involving bicycles frequently involve:

  • Distracted driving.
  • Insufficient attention to the road.
  • Running stop signs or red lights.
  • Failing to yield the right of way.
  • Texting while driving.

Tragic bicycle accidents could occur as a result of drunk or careless driving.
