Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrians are not as well protected as drivers and passengers in vehicles, so pedestrian accidents are more likely to result in fatalities.
There has been a strikingly higher average number of pedestrian fatalities in the US in recent years. In contrast to other traffic-related deaths, which decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, pedestrian deaths rose by 27% during that time.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 16% of all traffic fatalities in 2017 involved pedestrians. In US traffic accidents in 2017, there were 5,977 pedestrian fatalities. Every 88 minutes, death takes place on average.
Significant causes of pedestrian accidents include careless driving, excessive speeding, and failing to yield to pedestrians by drivers.
