Walking down a street to get to a nearby place is not unusual. On the other hand, accidents involving pedestrians are happening more and more in the United States.

In the last 33 years, a large number of traffic deaths have been caused by people who were walking. The Governors Highway Safety Association says that between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian deaths in the United States went up by 27%, while other traffic-related deaths went down by 14%.

In the United States, cars killed 5,977 people who were walking in 2017. This means that every 88 minutes, at least one pedestrian was killed in a crash.
