Pedestrian Accident Statistics

As one of the country’s largest and most populous states, California has an above-average number of traffic accidents yearly. These accidents cause massive losses. Each county in California contributed to the injury accident data.

In the most recent year studied by California’s Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), traffic accidents in San Bernardino resulted in 1,429 injuries or fatalities. It has the seventh highest rate of pedestrian accidents among 58 comparable cities.

While many of these accidents are due to driver error, many factors contribute to pedestrian safety. One of the most important is street design. Well-designed streets consider the needs of pedestrians and motorists, providing features that help reduce the risk of accidents. For example, sidewalks and crosswalks help to define the space that pedestrians occupy, and traffic lights and stop signs give pedestrians a clear signal to motorists about when it is safe to cross the street.
