Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

A hit-and-run accident is when a driver commits a traffic violation and leaves the scene of the accident without providing their personal information to the other driver or pedestrians involved. Hit-and-run accidents are a felony offense in most states, and they can result in heavy fines, jail time, and a driver’s license suspension.

According to a recent study, hit-and-run accidents are on the rise in the United States. In fact, the number of hit-and-run fatalities has increased by more than 60% over the past decade. While most hit-and-run accidents occur in urban areas, they can happen anywhere. Unfortunately, pedestrians are often the victims. Nearly 20% of all pedestrian fatalities are the result of hit-and-run accidents.

In some cases, a hit-and-run accident can also be considered a vehicular homicide if someone is killed due to the driver’s actions. While hit-and-run accidents are relatively rare, they often receive much media attention because of the severity of the crime. If you are ever involved in a hit-and-run accident, staying at the scene and calling the police to conduct an investigation is important.
