A man sustained severe injuries and crashed in a solo vehicle crash after attempting to avoid a CHP officer due to overspeeding in El Cajon on Sunday morning, September 11, 2022.
Around 7:50 a.m., a CHP sergeant who was keeping an eye on freeway speeds on eastbound state Route 52 close to Mission Gorge Road noticed a black Mercedes speeding past him.
The officer attempted to pull the 59-year-old driver over, but the driver increased his speed to over 100 mph, according to Gonsalves.
According to Gonsalves, the pursuit continued south on state Route 67 and turned west on Interstate 8.
The speeding motorist left on El Cajon’s West Main Street. He lost control of his vehicle as it moved down the exit ramp and flipped over onto the shoulder. The man was taken to a hospital for medical attention.
According to Gonsalves, authorities believe that alcohol may have played a role.
Reckless Driving Accident Statistics
Reckless driving is a severe issue for many Americans, but the good news is that it’s easy to prevent. The following statistics show how much of a problem reckless driving has become and how much it can impact your life.
In the United States, nearly 1.4 million people are injured in car accidents yearly. Of those 1.4 million wounded, more than 40% were passengers or pedestrians who were not involved in the accident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 7,000 people die yearly in car accidents caused by reckless drivers. That’s about one death every two hours.
And those are just the deaths. Reckless driving causes over a million injuries and more than $40 billion in property damage yearly.
It’s important to note that these statistics don’t just cover accidents on the road; they also include people who die due to their reckless behavior while riding bikes or skateboards.
