Pedestrian Accident Statistics
When a pedestrian is in an accident, the chance of getting hurt increases significantly. Pedestrians are most at risk from cars because they have the least protection. In 2020, almost 7,000 pedestrians were killed by vehicles on the roads in our country.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that in 2020, most pedestrian traffic deaths happened in cities (80%), on open roads (76%) instead of at intersections (24%), and when it was dark (76%).
As a pedestrian, you might try to keep yourself safe. Whenever you can cross at a crosswalk or significant intersection, don’t use headphones or other devices that could be distracting while walking.
Drivers should always be aware of pedestrians and watch out for them, especially in areas where pedestrians are likely to be (such as near schools or playgrounds). We can help make our roads safer for everyone by taking these steps.
