Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics

There is no question that multi-vehicle collisions are a severe road problem today. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), they are responsible for more than 10,000 deaths and almost 500,000 injuries every year in the United States alone.

What’s even more alarming is that these numbers are only increasing. In 2013, there were nearly 6,000 more multi-vehicle collision fatalities than in 2012. And while some of this increase can be attributed to the overall growth in traffic volume, it is clear that other factors are also at play.

By understanding the common causes of multi-vehicle collisions, we can start developing prevention strategies. For example, improved signage and lighting at intersections can help reduce the number of crashes. Similarly, educating drivers on the dangers of speeding and distracted driving can also have a positive impact.

The bottom line is those multi-vehicle collisions are a severe problem, but one that we can start to address by increasing our understanding of the statistics behind these crashes. With this knowledge, we can develop targeted strategies for prevention and make our roads safer for everyone.
