Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle collisions can be fatal. Because the protective frame of the car is absent, motorcycle riders are much more likely to sustain severe injuries in crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers of motorcycles are 26 times more likely to perish in a traffic accident than drivers of passenger vehicles.
5,014 motorcycle riders lost their lives in collisions in the US in 2016, according to data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Since the early 1980s, the number of motorcycle fatalities has been declining. Unfortunately, starting in 1998, they rose again and remained that way until 2008.
Several factors cause the high rate of motorcycle accidents. First, drivers have a more challenging time seeing motorcycles because they are much smaller than other vehicles on the road. Second, it’s challenging for other drivers to anticipate the movements of motorcycles because they move and stop more quickly than cars.
Finally, riding without a helmet or other safety equipment is a familiar risk motorcycle riders take. Even though wearing a helmet cannot ensure safety, it can significantly lessen the severity of injuries in the event of a collision. Riders can decrease their risk of being seriously injured in an accident by being aware of the risks involved with motorcycle riding.
