It’s important to know the right steps to take in order to ensure your safety and protect your legal rights. From addressing injuries to managing insurance claims, here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the aftermath of a car accident.

  1. Remain at the scene and assess everyone’s condition. Check yourself for injuries first, then assist others. Stay calm and composed.
  2. Contact the authorities promptly. The police will record the details of the accident and gather necessary information for official reports.
  3. If it’s safe, move to the side of the road, turn on your emergency flashers to warn other drivers, and wait in a secure location until the police arrive.
  4. Exchange names, phone numbers, and insurance details with the other driver(s). If possible, take photos of the vehicles, license plates, and any key details.
  5. When discussing the accident with the police or anyone else, avoid admitting fault or saying sorry. Stick to the facts.
  6. See a doctor or visit a hospital immediately. Quick medical attention can help lessen the severity of the injury and catch any internal issues.
  7. California insurance companies have specific deadlines for accident reports. Notify your insurer right away and follow their guidance.
  8. If the other party’s insurer contacts you soon after the crash, be cautious with the details you share. Avoid giving recorded statements or accepting settlement offers without talking to a lawyer first.
