Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Any traffic accident or collision can cause serious harm or death to anybody involved. According to official statistics, more than 70,000 pedestrians are killed or injured in the United States each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a pedestrian was killed in a traffic accident every 1.5 hours in 2016.
One of the main reasons for pedestrian accidents is distracted driving. Drivers might be on their phones, talking to passengers, or fiddling with the radio. When their attention is divided, they’re more likely to miss a pedestrian crossing the street. As a pedestrian, you should always be aware of your surroundings and look for signs that a driver might not see you. If you see a driver who appears to be distracted, it’s best to cross the street when they’re not around.
Another common cause of pedestrian accidents is poor visibility. This can be due to bad weather conditions or simply because it’s nighttime. If you can’t see well, chances are the driver can’t either. To avoid accidents in these situations, make sure to wear bright clothes so that you’re more visible. You should also use caution when crossing the street and only do so when there is a clear line of sight between you and the approaching driver.
