Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycle accidents can kill people. Since motorcycle riders don’t have the protective frame of a car, they are much more likely to get poorly hurt in accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that people who drive motorcycles are 26 times more likely to die in a traffic accident than people who drive cars.

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System says 5,014 motorcyclists died in accidents in the United States in 2016. (FARS). Since the early 1980s, the number of people dying while riding a motorcycle has been decreasing. Unfortunately, they went up again in 1998 and stayed that way until 2008.

There are a lot of motorcycle accidents because of a number of things. First, because motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles on the road, it’s harder for drivers to see them. Second, because motorcycles move and stop more quickly than cars, it’s hard for other drivers to guess what they’ll do.

Finally, motorcyclists often risk riding without a helmet or other safety gear. Even though wearing a helmet can’t make you completely safe, it can make your injuries much less harmful if you get into an accident. By knowing the risks of riding a motorcycle, riders can lower their chances of getting seriously hurt in an accident.
