Hit-and-Run Crash Statistics

It’s illegal to flee the scene of an accident. Every day in the United States, someone is involved in a hit-and-run. Hit-and-run accidents have caused the deaths of at least 2,000 people in the United States since 2006.

Unfortunately, hit-and-run accidents have become increasingly common. A 7% increase in fatalities was caused by hit-and-run drivers between 2009 and 2016. Increases in hit-and-run incidents are a major factor in the rising toll of traffic fatalities that cannot be attributed to intentional acts.

More people were killed in hit-and-run accidents in California than in any other state in this period. There were 3,056 fatalities in California alone of the total number of people who died in traffic accidents across the entire country in 2012.

The prospect of being seriously hurt in a car crash is terrifying. The other driver’s refusal to stop and accept responsibility can make things much worse.

These people are more likely to flee the scene of an accident because they are intoxicated, driving illegally, or are afraid of being arrested.
