According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, a grandmother and her granddaughter crossing the street were injured in a hit-and-run collision in the City of Industry on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
A surveillance video showed the accident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on South Azusa Avenue and Gemini Street.
A car speeding down Azusa Avenue hit them as they were crossing the street in the crosswalk, knocking them into the air, and then the driver took off.
He may have hit the emergency brake, which caused the car to slide at a 90-degree angle and strike the grandmother and granddaughter.
According to Fabian Barajas, the witness who caught the accident on video, the driver seemed to be on his phone or wasn’t even paying attention.
The Sheriff’s deputies were looking for a 1998 to 2002 4-door Silver Honda Accord.
Detectives were in the area on Thursday afternoon looking for more video and speaking to nearby residents and anyone else who might have seen it.
According to the LA County Sheriff’s Department, the driver’s car was discovered and impounded for evidence on Thursday around 2:30.
An individual was detained and lodged at the Industry Sheriff’s Station. According to the department, the investigation is still ongoing, and there is no additional information at this time.
The LA County Sheriff’s Office is requesting contact from anyone who may have images or footage of the hit-and-run or other details that could be useful to the investigation.
Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Fleeing at the scene of an accident is against the law. Every day, someone in the United States is involved in a hit-and-run. Over 2,000 people have been killed in hit-and-run accidents in the United States since 2006.
Unfortunately, hit-and-run incidents are more common than ever before. Between 2009 and 2016, the number of deaths caused by hit-and-run drivers rose by 7%. Hit-and-run accidents are on the rise, contributing significantly to the rising number of unintentional traffic deaths.
California had the highest rate of hit-and-run fatalities during this period. Of the total number of people killed in traffic accidents across the country in 2012, 3,056 were killed in California alone.
Worrying about being hurt severely in a car crash is a natural response. The other driver’s refusal to stop and accept responsibility can worsen things.
These individuals are more likely to flee the scene of an accident due to their intoxication, illegal driving, or fear of arrest.
