Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

A hit-and-run accident is when a driver causes an accident and then leaves the scene without providing any contact information or rendering aid to the injured parties. According to Valuepenguin, there were 2,948 fatal hit-and-runs in California from 2010 to 2019, resulting in 3,056 deaths.

So why are hit-and-run accidents becoming more common? For one thing, cars are getting bigger and heavier, which means that they cause more damage when they collide with smaller vehicles or pedestrians. Additionally, more people are using cell phones and other electronic devices while driving, which leads to distracted driving and increases accident risk. And finally, as our population continues to grow (especially in urban areas), there are more cars on the road, which means more opportunities for accidents.

Despite the dangers associated with hit-and-run accidents, many drivers still choose to flee the scene rather than stay and deal with the aftermath. In some cases, this may be due to drunk driving or other illegal activity where the driver tries to avoid being caught. But even sober drivers may leave the scene if they’re uninsured or don’t have a valid driver’s license.
