Two people were hurt in a hit-and-run collision involving a taco stand in the San Fernando Valley on Friday, September 30.
The crash occurred at around 11:53 p.m. in the Pacoima neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Two victims were found after the Foothill Division of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the hit-and-run collision.
Witnesses described the vehicle that struck the taco stand and the two victims as black in color and having run a stop sign at the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Mercer.
An air unit was requested by LAPD to search the area for the vehicle. Both victims sustained lower back injuries, with one suffering severe injuries after being dragged under the car for a distance of several feet. Ambulances were used to take both patients to the nearby hospital.
Laurel Canyon was closed on both sides while the accident was investigated.
Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Leaving the scene of an accident is against the law. An average of one hit-and-run incident occurs per day in the United States. Since 2006, at least 2,000 people have been killed as a result of hit-and-run accidents.
The number of hit-and-run accidents has unfortunately risen. Hit-and-run drivers were responsible for a 7% increase in fatalities between 2009 and 2016. The rising number of unintentional traffic fatalities is largely related to an increase in hit-and-run collisions.
In this period, more people were killed in California than in any other state due to hit-and-run drivers. The total number of people killed in traffic accidents across the country was 3,056 in 2012. Three thousand five hundred and sixty-six of those deaths occurred in the state of California alone.
Worrying about being hurt severely in a car crash is a natural response. Refusal on the part of the other driver to stop and take responsibility can make matters much worse.
Due to their intoxication, illegal driving, or fear of arrest, these individuals are more likely to flee the scene of an accident.
