Multi-Vehicle Accident Statistics

A multi-vehicle accident is a crash between more than one car. People often call this kind of car accident a “pile-up,” especially when six or more cars are involved. On highways, where hundreds of cars drive at high speeds next to each other, these kinds of accidents happen often. This makes it hard for many drivers close to an accident to stop safely, which can cause them to crash into other cars.

When fog, rain, or snow makes it hard to see on the road, accidents involving more than one car are more likely to happen. Drivers need to be extra careful and on the lookout in these conditions. Some drivers still don’t know how dangerous the roads are, though.

In many multi-car accidents, drivers don’t have enough time to decide whether or not to hit the cars in front of them. Most scared drivers hit their brakes too late, swerve into other lanes, and skid, which starts a terrible chain reaction and makes the pile-up bigger.

Accidents involving more than one car often leave victims with severe injuries and debt. Also, high-speed car accidents can kill people. The U.S. Census Bureau says that 10,2 million Americans died in car accidents in 2008. About 30% of all traffic deaths are caused by people exceeding the speed limit.

Most accidents happen because of careless or aggressive driving, driving while distracted, or not following traffic laws. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that the way roads are built significantly affects accidents caused by speed.

After looking at crash data from 2002, they found that sharp turns were the cause of about 40% of high-speed-related deaths. Under the same driving conditions, speeding caused more than twice as many deaths as not going fast enough.

In a crash with more than three cars, it can be harder to figure out who was at fault than in a collision with one to three vehicles. Even insurance companies can’t figure out quickly who is at fault or what caused the accident. This is why many cases end up in court. The court can look into the situation more, make a fair decision, and decide on fair compensation.

Even so, many states strictly enforce their “contributory negligence” laws, which say that if a person is at least 1% to blame for any part of an accident, they can’t get paid for it. Other states have “comparative negligence,” which states that each driver’s compensation is based on how much they were at fault.

Some states have a “no-fault” rule for when several cars crash into each other. When these things happen, you should act right away to help yourself. Like different kinds of traffic accidents, accidents involving more than one car need evidence to be gathered.

Usually, the person with the best evidence list wins, whether there is a death or not. The highest amount of money is paid to that person. The primary evidence that is looked at is negligence, which can be either contributory or comparative.
