Traffic Accident Statistics

Globally, traffic accidents are the leading cause of death and injury. In the United States, for example, traffic accidents claimed nearly 40,000 lives and injured over four million people in 2016. While traffic accidents have decreased in recent years, they pose a significant threat to public safety. Speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving are all factors that can contribute to traffic accidents.

Nobody ever expects to be in a car accident, but they happen daily. You must know what to do to ensure your safety and those around you. Examine for any injuries. The first step is to ensure that neither you nor your passengers are seriously injured. Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if anyone is hurt. If an injured person is in immediate danger of further injury, do not attempt to move them.

Call the cops. Even if the damage appears minor, it is critical to contact the police so that an official report can be made. The report could be useful later on when dealing with insurance companies.

Exchange information with the other driver or drivers. Obtain the other driver’s or drivers’ name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, and insurance information. Obtain the names and contact information of any witnesses.

Take photos of all vehicle damage and any visible injuries sustained by those involved. Report the accident and begin the claims process with your insurance company as soon as possible. If you believe you were at fault or partially at fault for the accident, do not admit fault or sign anything without first consulting with an attorney.
