Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Leaving the scene of an accident is against the law. A hit-and-run accident occurs every day somewhere in the United States. At least 2,000 people have been killed in hit-and-run accidents in the United States since 2006.
The frequency of hit-and-run accidents has unfortunately risen. There was a 7% increase in deaths attributable to hit-and-run drivers between 2009 and 2016. An increasing number of unintentional traffic fatalities can be attributed to the rise in hit-and-run incidents.
More people were killed in hit-and-run accidents in California than in any other state as of this period. Of the total number of people killed in traffic accidents across the United States in 2012, 3,056 were killed in just California.
Being seriously hurt in a car crash is a terrifying possibility. The situation can escalate rapidly if the other driver does not stop and take responsibility.
These people are more likely to flee the scene of an accident because they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, operating a vehicle illegally, or are afraid of being arrested.
