Big Rig Accident Statistics
Big rigs refer to the enormous tractor-trailers and semis that are a common sight on the roads today. Either term can be used to describe trucks in the business world.
Compared to other car crashes, tractor-trailer collisions have an extremely high fatality rate. Large commercial vehicles like semi-trucks and buses are a major contributor to this problem. There needs to be more space for a semitrailer to stop when it’s hauling a lot of weight.
On average, one person is killed in a truck-related accident every 15 minutes in the United States. Transportation-related accidents kill nearly 500,000 people annually, including 5,000 truck drivers in the U.S.
In California, truck accidents account for about 113 annual fatalities and nearly 3,000 yearly injuries. Between two hundred and three hundred Californians lose their lives in truck-related accidents every year.
The number of people killed in accidents involving semi-trucks reached an all-time high between 2009 and 2015. Tractor-trailer crashes accounted for one in ten fatalities on U.S. roads in 2015.
When following a heavy truck traveling at less than 40 miles per hour, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recommends giving it at least 4 seconds of space. When traveling at speeds greater than forty miles per hour, another second must be added.
Internal Injuries
The full extent of your injuries may not become apparent until you return home from the hospital. An internal injury is often difficult to diagnose without medical training and experience. There’s a chance the bleeding is internal. You may not realize you’re bleeding until it’s too late if you don’t have your blood pressure checked regularly by a doctor.
