[10-15-2022] Fatal Big Rig Crash in Los Banos Kills One PersonAccording to California Highway Patrol, a big rig accident involving two semis resulted in one fatality in Los Banos on Saturday night, October 15, 2022.

According to the officers, the Merced Communication Center (MCC) received reports of a collision at approximately 11:44 p.m. on Henry Miller Avenue and Cherokee Road.

When police arrived to conduct their investigation, they discovered paramedics aiding two of the drivers who had been injured in the collision.

A 36-year-old Cantua Creek man who was one of the drivers was declared dead at the scene.

According to police, a semi-truck pulling two tomato-filled trailers was traveling at 55 mph in the eastbound direction on Henry Miller Avenue close to Cherokee Road.

The 36-year-old was also operating a semi-truck with two empty tomato trailers that was traveling at an unknown speed west of Henry Miller Avenue and east of Cherokee Road.

According to investigators, the first semi-truck’s right tires drifted onto Henry Miller Avenue’s south shoulder, which led to the rear trailer losing control and veering into the westbound lane.

According to police, the second semi-truck’s front collided with the one that had entered its lane.

The other driver who was involved in the collision was unharmed.

Authorities claim they do not think drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.

Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big rigs are the massive tractor-trailers and semis that are a common sight on American roads today. Either term can be used to describe trucks in the business world.

When compared to other types of vehicle accidents, the fatality rate in tractor-trailer collisions is through the roof. Semitrailers and buses, which are both very large vehicles, are a major factor in this issue. When transporting a lot of weight, a semitrailer requires more stopping room.

Every 15 minutes, somebody in the United States is killed in an accident involving a truck. Each year, nearly 500,000 people die in transportation-related accidents in the United States, including 5,000 truck drivers.

Nearly 3% of all annual injuries and 113 annual deaths in California are attributed to truck accidents. Two hundred and thirty people per year in California are killed in accidents involving trucks.

Between 2009 and 2015, there was a dramatic increase in the number of fatalities associated with semi-truck accidents. One in ten people killed in traffic accidents in the United States in 2015 was a passenger vehicle hit by a tractor-trailer.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration advises leaving at least 4 seconds of space when following a large truck going less than 40 miles per hour. Over forty miles per hour necessitates an extra second of travel time.
