Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcyclists continue to face serious risks on U.S. roads because of limited protection and reduced visibility. In 2023, 6,335 motorcyclists lost their lives in crashes nationwide, the highest number ever recorded and a 26 percent increase compared to 2019.
Even though motorcycles represented only 3 percent of all registered vehicles that year, they were involved in 15 percent of all traffic fatalities. Federal data also shows that in 2022, motorcyclists were nearly 22 times more likely to die in a crash per mile traveled than people in passenger cars.
These statistics show how vulnerable riders remain, particularly at intersections and while making turns. Promoting safe riding habits, driver awareness, and consistent helmet use continues to be vital in reducing these numbers.
