Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
NHTSA reports that deaths involving cyclists decreased by 3 percent this year, from 871 to 846. To rephrase, autos are involved in only 2% of fatalities, while bicycles are involved in 80%.
Bicycles and electric bicycles (E-bikes) in California are afforded the same legal protections as automobiles. When on the road, bicyclists must follow the same rules of the road as motorists. They must stop at red lights and proceed in a straight line.
Unfortunately, many motorists show no regard for cyclists’ safety and drive dangerously close to them. Therefore, there is a genuine possibility that people will be hurt, and even killed.
All states in the US combined, California has the highest rate of fatalities involving bicycles. It should come as no surprise that urban areas have a higher rate of accidents involving these vehicles because that is where they are most concentrated. Between 2016 and 2018, there were approximately 455 fatalities involving cyclists in California.
