Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Even though pedestrian safety has been brought to the forefront of the public’s mind thanks to awareness campaigns, the number of accidents involving pedestrians continues to rise. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 2019 marked the highest pedestrian fatalities in the past 25 years.
The increased frequency of these incidents is expected, given the more significant number of vehicles on the road and the prevalence of distracted driving. Can we do anything about it?
Both pedestrians and motorists can take measures to reduce the likelihood of collisions. Pedestrians should always keep their eyes open and only cross the street at designated intersections. Whenever possible, drivers should yield the right of way to pedestrians in high-traffic areas.
It’s dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike to use their phones while out and about. These measures will significantly reduce the yearly incidence of pedestrian accidents.
Despite everyone’s best efforts, mishaps may occur. You might be eligible for compensation if you suffered injuries as a pedestrian in an accident that wasn’t your fault. Hiring a personal injury attorney can be very helpful in obtaining payment for medical bills, lost wages, and other losses related to the accident.
