Two people were airlifted following a collision involving a semi-tractor trailer on Interstate 15 on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.
The California Highway Patrol and San Bernardino Fire Department received reports of a collision around 12:28 pm on northbound Interstate 15 about 7 miles after the Harvard Road exit.
According to the traffic log, the tractor-trailer was rear-ended by a gray Jeep Gladiator semi at a high speed, then rolled over several times into the center divider. The 20-foot semi-trailer was knocked over and turned on its side.
Rescue personnel called for two medical helicopters to transport the two people inside the Jeep. The condition of one person flown by a CHP H82 helicopter from the scene to Loma Linda University Medical Center is unknown.
The condition of the other person flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center by Mercy Air 2 Helicopter at the scene is unknown.
The driver of the semi was unharmed.
The California Highway Patrol Barstow Office is still investigating the accident.
Big Rig Accident Statistics
The term “big rig” commonly refers to enormous tractor-trailers and semi-trucks. In professional contexts, either term may be used for trucks.
Tractor-trailer accidents have a much higher fatality rate than other forms of car collisions. Semitrailers and buses, both of which are very long and wide, contribute significantly to the problem. When hauling a heavy load, semitrailers require a larger stopping distance.
One person is killed in a truck-related accident every 15 minutes in the United States. Over 5,000 truck drivers per year in the United States alone are among the nearly half a million people who lose their lives in transportation-related accidents.
Nearly 3,000 people are injured, and 113 people are killed each year in California due to truck accidents. Between two hundred and three hundred people per year lose their lives in truck-related accidents in California.
The number of people killed in accidents involving semi-trucks rose to an all-time high between 2009 and 2015. One out of every ten road fatalities in the United States involved a tractor-trailer in 2015.
As recommended by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, following a large truck traveling under 40 miles per hour requires at least four seconds of space. Over forty miles per hour requires an extra second.
