Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In 2023, nearly 7,314 pedestrians lost their lives in traffic accidents across the United States, representing approximately 18% of all traffic-related fatalities. This is a dramatic rise of nearly 78% compared to 2009, which saw the lowest number of pedestrian deaths recorded.

Hit-and-run accidents continue to be a serious problem. In 2023, one out of every four pedestrian deaths involved a driver who fled the scene. The percentage of such incidents had been about 20% between 2014 and 2019, but it increased to 24% in 2020 and remained at 25% in more recent years.

Looking at trends over time, pedestrian safety has improved for most age groups. For instance, the death rate among children under 13 dropped by 93% from 1975 to 2023. Teenagers aged 13 to 19 saw a 71% reduction, and adults aged 70 and older experienced a 73% decrease in fatalities. The only group with an increase in fatality rates was adults aged 20 to 44, who saw a 6% rise.

Since 2009, the pedestrian death rates have continued to climb among adults over 20, while rates for children and teens have consistently fallen, highlighting a growing gap in pedestrian safety across different age groups.
