Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In recent years, there has been a rise, across the United States, in both the number of pedestrians killed and injured and the severity of those injuries.

According to data provided by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the number of people killed in traffic incidents decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, whereas the number of pedestrians killed increased by 27% during the same period.

In 2016, there were 5,977 deaths caused by pedestrians across the country. When that year came to a close, it was estimated that 88 people passed away every minute. At least 137,000 people were treated in emergency rooms of hospitals in 2017 due to injuries sustained while walking.

In California in 2012, there were 893 pedestrian deaths and over 14,000 pedestrian injuries. According to the findings of some studies, this places the state in the top spot for having the highest number of pedestrians killed or seriously injured.

When drivers fail to yield to pedestrians or stop too abruptly, it is almost always the pedestrians who are injured or killed in these accidents. If you are considering going to court, it is in your best interest to consult with a lawyer who focuses on cases similar to yours.
