The San Diego Police Department reported a 74-year-old man getting pinned and later killed by a vehicle in San Diego on Friday morning, November 11, 2022.
According to the local police, the fatal crash occurred at 7:30 a.m. near the Polaris Drive and Capricorn Way intersection in the Mira Mesa neighborhood.
The news release from the police said that the elderly man was walking north on Polaris Drive, just east of the Capricorn Way intersection when a silver Toyota Tacoma traveling east on Capricorn struck the pedestrian.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department sent a rescue team when the pedestrian got pinned under the truck.
The rescuers were able to extricate the victim from beneath the truck, but SDPD said he was declared dead at the spot.
Capricorn Way and Polaris Drive were closed while the police investigated the collision. For several hours, drivers were urged to stay away from the area.
The event is still being investigated, and the truck’s driver stayed on the site. Police said they found no evidence that alcohol played any role in the collision.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Both the overall number of pedestrian fatalities and injuries and the severity of those injuries have risen in recent years across the United States.
The number of people killed in automobile accidents fell by 14% between 2007 and 2016, according to data given by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), yet the number of people killed while walking climbed by 27% during the same time period.
There were 5,977 pedestrian deaths in the United States in 2016. By year’s end, it was calculated that 88 people were dying per minute. At least 137,000 persons in 2017 visited hospital emergency rooms due to pedestrian injuries.
In 2012, 893 pedestrians were killed and almost 14,000 were injured in California alone. Some research suggests that this is a major contributor to the high number of pedestrian fatalities and severe injuries in the state.
When drivers don’t give pedestrians the right of way or brake too suddenly, pedestrians are virtually always harmed. If you want to take legal action of any type, you should see a lawyer who focuses on instances like yours.
