Authorities said a dirt bike rider was killed ten days after being hit by a car in Menifee on Saturday evening, November 19, 2022.
According to the Menifee Police Department, the fatal crash occurred around 6:00 p.m. at the Bundy Canyon Road and Sunset Avenue intersection.
The rider was reportedly traveling east on Bundy Canyon when he slowed down to make a turn onto Sunset Avenue. A Chevrolet Volt pulled up next to him and failed to notice him.
The rider was thrown from his motorcycle after being rear-ended by the car. The unharmed driver pulled over and dialed 911.
The Riverside County Fire Department arrived and provided the victim with life-saving care before taking him in critical condition to a regional trauma center, where he would later die.
The dirt bike was a non-street legal vehicle that lacked sufficient lighting. Riders are reminded by the authorities to keep off the road.
Although the Chevy driver was not detained, the investigation still continued.
Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
According to the National Safety Council, motorcycle riders were accountable for 14% of all traffic fatalities, 18% of all occupant fatalities, and 4% of all occupant injuries in 2020, although accounting for only 3% of registered cars and 0.6% of vehicle kilometers traveled. Wearing a helmet can reduce these fatalities.
Motorcycle-related fatalities climbed by 11% in 2020 compared to 2019, with a 23% increase in the rate per 100 million vehicle kilometers. Over the past ten years, the death toll has increased by 20%, but the death rate has increased by 27%. Currently, there are 5,579 fatalities per 100,000 kilometers of driving (a rate of 31.64).
California is the nation’s motorcycle registration leader, with 785,424 motorcycles registered. Nearly 88% of all traffic fatalities and injuries in the state are caused by motorcycle riders. Roughly 6% of these fatalities can be linked to incidents where no helmet was used.
These figures support our concerns that recovering after an accident is substantially harder for motorcycle riders than for drivers of other vehicles. A car with four wheels is safer and more stable on the road than one with two wheels. Consider the particular abilities you’ll need to develop to ride a motorcycle.
