According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at about 12:30 p.m. south of Chicken Ranch Road, north of State Route 49.

The victim was traveling at 60 to 70 mph on a 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he attempted to pass a pickup truck on the right on the highway’s dirt shoulder.

The teen then lost control and crashed. He got ejected from his motorcycle and got hit by the pickup. He was seriously hurt and died on the spot despite reportedly wearing a helmet.

The pickup was a 2018 Dodge Ram truck driven by Bryce H., 27, of Copperopolis. He and his passenger, Starla H., were unharmed.

As the crash was still being investigated, the Sheriff’s/Coroner’s Office withheld the rider’s identification since he was a kid.
According to the CHP, it is not believed that alcohol or drugs had a role.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics

In 2020, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all traffic deaths, 18% of all occupant fatalities, and 4% of all occupant injuries, making up only 3% of registered cars and 0.6% of vehicle kilometers traveled. Helmets affect motorcycling death patterns.

Motorcycle deaths jumped 11% from 2019 to 2020, while the rate per 100 million vehicle km rose 23%. Death rates have jumped 20% and 27% in 10 years. The rate is 31.64 per 100 million vehicle km, with 5,579 deaths.

Motorcycle riders had the highest percentage of alcohol impairment in fatal crashes in 2020 (27% vs. 23% for cars, 19% for light vehicles, and 3% for trucks).

With 785,424 motorbike registrations, California ranks top. The state is one of the worst for motorcyclists, with 500 deaths yearly. 6 percent of these deaths are due to not wearing helmets.

Reports say motorcycles are less crash-resistant than cars, less steady, and more obvious than four-wheelers. Motorcycling differs from four-wheel driving, so riders are more sensitive to weather and road risks.
