Single Vehicle Accident Statistics

The National Safety Council reports many factors contributing to a rise in road deaths in 2020, including an increase in crashes involving not wearing seat belts, traveling at an unsafe speed, or being under the influence. Following three years of decline, the death rate increased by 8.3%. The number of deaths increased to 42,338 in 2020 from 39,107 in 2019.

Despite this increase, the rate of fatalities per 10 000 licensed cars dropped from 33 in 1913 to 1.53 in 2020, a decrease of 95%. With 1,300,000 automobiles on the road that year, it is no surprise that 4,200 individuals lost their lives. 276 million registered vehicles and 42,338 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2020.

In 2020, there were fewer persons (by 0.4 percentage points), fewer registered automobiles (by 0.2 percentage points), and fewer kilometers traveled (by 11 percentage points). The result was an increase of 21.7% in the death toll per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, 8.5% in the death toll per vehicle, and 7.9% in the death toll per person.

About 4.8 million people in 2020 needed medical attention after being harmed in a car crash. Injuries sustained in vehicle collisions were calculated to cost a total of $473.2 billion. All factors are lost pay, medical bills, office expenses, car repairs, and employer costs.
