Authorities are looking for a driver who allegedly struck several cars on the 405 Freeway in Costa Mesa Monday morning, November 28, 2022.
The crash reportedly transpired around 7:45 a.m. on the southbound lane, just north of the 55 Freeway.
Reports state that the driver of the Toyota Camry Solara, driving in the No. 1 lane, was suddenly stopped by the traffic in front of him.
The vehicle appeared unable to stop and swerved into the HOV lane. Then, a Tesla was struck by the car while it was in the same lane.
When the Solara re-entered the No. 1 lane, it collided with the two cars in front of it.
As a result of the crash, the Tesla driver was transported to Hoag hospital and sustained minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the occupants of the Toyota Tacoma and Ford 150 were uninjured.
Immediately after the collision, the Solara driver got out of the car and began walking north along the 405 Freeway.
Officers were unable to find him when they got on the spot.
Although the car’s registered owner has been identified, police are still looking into whether the man driving it may have been the owner, knew the owner, or could have stolen it.
The driver was described as a Latino adult man around 5 feet 7 inches tall in his early 30s, wearing a yellow, long-sleeve shirt with a red letter “S” on the back at the time of the accident.
Details on the crash are still ongoing.
Hit-And-Run Collision Statistics
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that 680,000 individuals are hurt or killed in hit-and-run collisions each year in the United States. Recent studies indicate a rise in fatal hit-and-run accidents. These accidents accounted for 24% of all pedestrian fatalities in 2020.
Studies have shown that California has the most significant pedestrian fatalities and injuries rate compared to other states. In 2012, there were 893 fatalities and nearly 14,000 injuries among California’s pedestrians.
A hit-and-run collision occurs when a car collides with another one without stopping to assist. Because victims of hit-and-run accidents often lack adequate medical care, their conditions may worsen.
Drivers who abruptly fail to yield to pedestrians or brake can result in a pedestrian’s death or injury.
Pedestrians are advised to walk along sidewalks whenever possible, abstain from using drugs and alcohol when walking, and be cautious when crossing streets and driveways to reduce the chance of injuries in crashes.
