Authorities said a bicyclist was killed in a vehicle collision in San Jacinto on Sunday evening, December 04, 2022.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred shortly before 8:21 p.m. at the State Street and Dillon Avenue intersection.
Responders arrived at the site and found a man lying on the road. A white Hyundai southbound on State Street traveling at high speed reportedly entered the center median and struck the victim standing there with his bicycle.
The driver did not stop, continuing south while the victim was declared dead on the spot by the responders.
Deputies tracked the man and the car to a Hemet address after a witness provided the license plate, and a 21-year-old man was arrested the following day.
The suspect, Savaughn B. was taken into custody at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning with a $100,000 bail.
There is no information about the victim’s name or whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
No matter how many laws are written to protect them, bicycle accidents will continue to happen in the United States. Nearly 800 bikers were killed nationwide in 2018. The majority of these fatalities occurred in the state of California.
In the United States, there were 50,000 fewer bicycle accidents reported in 2018. In 2001, there were 12% fewer bicycle accidents overall, but there were more fatalities altogether.
With 4.4 per 100,000 residents, California has the highest rate of bicycle-related fatalities in the country. The National Bicycle Safety Foundation reports that in California in 2017, there were 11,116 injuries and 145 bicycle fatalities.
There are several inherent risks with regular cycling. Drivers routinely break traffic laws and approach bikers at risky distances, endangering everyone on the road. As a result, there is a larger chance of harm and perhaps death.
