Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics
There will always be incidents involving bicycles in the United States, no matter how many regulations are passed to safeguard them. In 2018, almost 800 bicyclists were killed across the country. The state of California accounted for a disproportionate share of these fatalities.
In 2018, there were 50,000 fewer bicycle accidents reported in the United States. Despite a 12% drop in overall bicycle accidents in 2001, the national death toll actually rose.
California has the highest rate of bicycle-related fatalities in the United States, at 4.4 per 100,000 residents. According to the National Bicycle Safety Foundation, 145 cyclists were killed and 11,116 were injured in California in 2017.
Regular cycling has some inherent dangers. Drivers consistently ignore traffic regulations and get dangerously close to cyclists, endangering the lives of everyone on the road. This results in a higher risk of injury and perhaps death.
