Fatal Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident Statistics

Leaving the scene of an accident is itself a crime. Hit-and-run drivers often leave the scene because they are drunk, don’t have a license, or don’t want to get arrested if they stay.

Riding a bicycle on the road can be very dangerous and sometimes lead to fatal accidents, especially if you live in a city. However, the deaths of pedal cyclists (bicyclists and other cyclists, including riders of two-wheeled, non-motorized vehicles, tricycles, and unicycles) jumped 35% by 2016 from the 2010 low to 840. When the NHTSA first released its reports, they said there had been 857 cyclist deaths in 2018. But later releases put the total at 871, and now they think there will be 846 deaths in 2019.

Bicycle accidents happen when drivers don’t give cyclists the right of way, run a stop sign or red light, don’t pay enough attention to the road, or text while driving. Careless or drunk driving can also cause a fatal bicycle accident.
