Hit-And-Run Crash Statistics

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that 680,000 Americans are injured or killed in hit-and-runs annually. A recent study shows a rise in hit-and-run fatalities. Hit-and-run accidents caused twenty-four percent of pedestrian deaths in 2020.

More pedestrians have severe injuries in California than in any other state. Nearly 14,000 pedestrians were injured, and over 893 pedestrians died in California in 2012.

A hit-and-run accident occurs when two vehicles collide, and the fleeing vehicle does not stop to assist the injured party. In addition to the pain and suffering caused by car accidents, hit-and-run accidents can have negative consequences when victims do not receive immediate medical attention.

Accidents involving pedestrians are frequently caused by failure to yield to pedestrians or sudden braking.

To limit their risk of injury, pedestrians should use sidewalks whenever possible, avoid drugs and alcohol, exercise caution when crossing parking lots, and obey all traffic laws.
