Big Rig Accident Statistics

Given their larger size and greater structural integrity, trucks provide greater safety for their drivers in the event of an accident than either cars or pedestrians. The National Safety Council has found that this is the top cause of fatality for those traveling by passenger vehicle.

More than 4,000 individuals are killed in the United States each year in accidents involving trucks. Only 2% of accidents involve large vehicles, but they’re responsible for 12% of fatalities.

In California, truck drivers are not allowed to exceed 55 miles per hour on any highway (state or federal). The goal here is to lessen the number of times big rigs are responsible for mishaps.

It is estimated that 28,000 truck accidents occur each year in California, as reported by the California Office of Traffic Safety. There were 359 fatalities and 9,500 injuries recorded in 2017.
